One Day Amboseli Safari from Nairobi. The trip is an early morning one, which requires one to depart before dawn to get to Amboseli in good time for game viewing. Amboseli National Park, it is the second most popular animal park after Maasai Mara, is 260km (160 miles) from Nairobi, on the border with the neighboring country of Tanzania. Its magnificent situation at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, combined with its excellent opportunities to view Kenya’s animals, make it one of the best places for safaris.
Itinerary
Departure: 0500Hrs: Pick up from home or hotel in Nairobi and Drive to Amboseli National Park. We will start our trek early on the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway, crossing the African savannah. One will be able to see a luminous Kenya sunrise lighting up a countryside of homesteads and brightly outfitted Maasai herdsmen with their cattle. The drive is about 3-4 hours.
Arrival and Breakfast: 09:30Hrs: Arrive for check in and a quick breakfast at the preferred camp site and start the adventure with our first game drive. With Mt. Kilimanjaro as our background, you’ll see the herds of protected elephants, many sporting immense ivory tusks.
Mid-Morning Game drive: 10:30Hrs:Mid-Morning game drive in Amboseli. We’ll set out for more wildlife viewing on a mid-morning game drive. Because the vegetation here can get sparse during the dry months, the park offers wonderful opportunities for spotting animals. The birdlife is also abundant in Amboseli, especially around the swamp and marshlands of the park. You’ll find raptors and also water birds like pelican, crake and kingfisher. For even more wildlife viewing, we’ll take a ride up to Observation Hill. This vantage point will give us an overall vista of the entire park. Check out the swamps below where the elephants gather daily. You can also walk about the hill as it’s one of the few places in the park you can explore on foot. Another unique feature here is the indigenous Maasai people who live within the park’s borders. If you’d like you can take an optional visit with the Maasai to meet them and learn about their culture and lifestyle.
Lunch: 1400Hrs: Enjoy a picnic lunch at the Observation hill where you will be able to have a 360 degree view of Amboseli. We were able to see a lot of birds up close here with aerial views of the park. We could see zebras, wildebeests and hippos in the areas around the hill. Continue with afternoon game drive. Dinner and overnight at preferred tented camp.
